San Jose Green Waste - 2016
Filmed December 29th and 30th, 2016
Continuing the tradition of an annual San Jose Green Waste video.
The highlight of this year’s installment is one of Greenwaste’s old Volvo WX42/Heil Formula 5000s that I happened to stumble upon in Downtown San Jose. Unfortunately a New Way Sidewinder had swept the area for carts and green waste in general was relatively light so it was rather difficult to film. In addition is that diesel 2012 Peterbilt 320/New Way Sidewinder that was also in downtown, and a 2007 Autocar WX64/Labrie Automizer, a 2009 ALF Condor/Labrie Automizer, and two 2007 Peterbilt 320/Leach 2RIIIs in the Almaden Valley.
Still a great operation they got going here. One thing I noticed is that the automated trucks seem to be the primary trucks for carts and the rear loaders only se...

30 Minutes Of Green Waste Pickup | Green Waste Recovery
So today, since I couldn’t find any other drivers I thought why not, let’s go after a yard waste crew that I know and film them for a bit. Since 206/406 were the closest to me I filmed them. Some of you guys may recognize 206/406 from Garbage Truck Of San Jose’s channel.
206 is a 2021 Mack LR leach 2R-lls
406 is a 2021 Volvo

GreenWaste Recovery | San Jose's Unique "Loose" Yard Waste Collection (5)
It's been quite a while since I've featured GWR, figured I'd kick the year off with another compilation of their trucks.
Back in November 2022, the T2 crew came onto my route to help out my crew, and this was right after they had received their new truck and loader. It was quite a surprise to run into them, especially considering their route is also notoriously heavy during the late fall and summer season. Was also cool to see George in the loader too since I had found out he was once assigned to my route with his father before he retired.
In early 2023 I caught Jose driving 201 (which seems to be the most reoccurring shuttle truck on my route) and Ivan in 406 right as winter was kicking off. The real star of the show was the enormous set out of branches that came from a few trees being ...

Green Waste Collection in San Jose
Big thanks to both crews for letting me film! On a recent trip to San Jose we ended up finding two different crews and didn’t get full videos of either so I decided to just throw it together. We ended up finding two of the heil big bites and one crew had the older cat while one had the newer Volvo tractor . Definitely was very interesting to see this method in affect and it genuinely seems to work well! Hope u guys enjoy!

Waste Connections of San Jose | Garbage Truck Compilation
With my channel name being "Garbage Trucks of San Jose", it'd only be a matter of time before I finally got the motivation to head towards West San Jose to find GreenTeam & West Valley trucks to film.
We got to West Capitol Expressway around 6AM and biked to the top of the city's famed Communications Hill neighborhood. Almost immediately we saw a lone Expert 2000 heading to the top of the hill, with Julio behind the wheel. Being that it was my main objective to find one, that's what we went for right off the bat. We stayed with him for a little over two hours before we left.
Biking down Azores Street to the bottom of the hill (which was in of itself a journey), we ran into one of the company's McNeilus ZRs with Daniel behind the wheel. Collecting at the Helzer Court Apartments, it's righ...

California Waste Solutions | Repainted Peterbilt 320 McNeilus M/A (1)
Here's some footage of an uncommon truck from CWS's SJ fleet.
Backstory on how this unit ended up here. In 2018, three 2002 Volvo WXLL Heil RRs that at the time were out of service for 3 years, were scrapped. Therefore, it allowed space for a few "new" trucks. CWS's operation in Oakland had received brand new trucks in 2013 for a new contract that extended their operations from West Oakland to recycling in the entire city of Oakland. Before that, they ran these Peterbilt 320s on M/As in their original white color scheme.
Their fleet is now almost 100% CNG if it isn't already 100%. They had a bunch of these units laying around. CWS SJ's yard is still basically 100% diesel. Oakland sent a decent chunk of their older fleet down here. The CWS SJ yard has a total of 8 M/As. Three have recent...

GreenWaste Recovery | San Jose's Unique "Loose" Yard Waste Collection (3)
Hey guys, here's another video featuring five of GreenWaste Recovery's many Heil Big Bites.
During the summer of 2021, I made a good effort to try to film these 2002 Peterbilt 320 Heil Big Bites. A photo surfaced of the brand new rear loaders that GWR purchased for their contract renewal; New Way King Cobras(?) and Leach 2RIIIs all mounted on Mack LRs. As soon as I saw that, I knew the clock was ticking for these oldies.
It is comforting to know that GreenWaste Recovery isn't totally just viewing these oldies as retirees. Truck #210 was actually fully refurbished (new lights, paint job, decals) and renumbered to #200. I hope they do more of these refurbishments rather than just replacing a majority of their fleet. However, I'm seeing that a majority of these trucks will more than likely ...

The “Old New” Leach | Green Waste Recovery | 234
Here you will see T2 (202 and 402). 202 only collected for about 2 hours when it had a hydraulic leak on it’s packer blade. To which it had to go back to the yard to get a spare. Unfortunately 202 was replaced by 234 which is the newest of the older leaches that green waste bought before buying the Mack’s. This truck would replace an older leach that caught fire a while back. Many drivers don’t like this truck as it has no a/c and tends to launch carts. Hope you enjoy the video

A photo surfaced of the brand new rear loaders that GWR purchased for their contract renewal; New Way King Cobras(?) and Leach 2RIIIs all mounted on Mack LRs. Some of the 2008 Peterbilt 320 Leach 2RIIIs have already been taken out of service and pushed back to the spare role to make way for the new rear loaders, even though they're a full five years younger than these Big Bites. There's nothing that makes me doubt that these aren't next to be replaced. The 2008 CAT 914G loaders have also begun to be replaced with brand new Volvo L45H...

California Waste Solutions | Repainted Peterbilt 320 McNeilus M/A (2)
Hey guys! It's been a while since I've uploaded anything. Apologies for that. Here's another video of one of CWS's spare units!
My driver has been out for a while due to a knee injury. For the first two weeks, my route was open and up for grabs to anyone. The good thing about an open route, is that it's usually a pool driver using whatever truck is left in the yard. I believe once Diego was finished running bulk, he came back to the yard and jumped in whatever truck was left, which just so happened to be #SJ110.
These M/A's used to make up the entirety of the old Oakland fleet up until 2013, when a new contract extended their operations from West Oakland to recycling in the entire city of Oakland. Part of the contract renewal required brand new CNG trucks. Some of these diesel units were...

Still a great operation they got going here. One thing I noticed is that the automated trucks seem to be the primary trucks for carts and the rear loaders only seem to handle them on a select few streets or in “whoever gets there first” situations, which has drastically sped up the main rear load/loader crews. I would guess the old Volvo and Peterbilt Heils are up for replacement on the sooner side of things so I’m curious to see what the new trucks may end up being (I also believe the city’s contracts with their 4 haulers go up in 2018 so that may certainly play a role).
Thanks to all drivers as usual, in particular Jose on truck 230. Hard to believe it’s been 5 ½ years since I first filmed him https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLKFE8vtLjQ

The real star of the show was the enormous set out of branches that came from a few trees being cut down. It would've completely filled up the truck if it wasn't for the fact that the T1 crew was there to assist (who were coincidentally using 206 as their shuttle truck).
Cut to mid-2023, and by then, Ivan had left the company. Once again I was left with an unassigned driver. Jose would also move off of my route shortly after, but not before completely redoing the way the route was done, and teaching one of the replacement drivers on how to run it. Again, they were utilizing 201 as a shuttle truck.
During that time, a group of investors under the Australian Macquarie Group, dba MIP V Waste, bought out GreenWaste Recovery and Zanker Recycling. All operations now operate under the name "GreenWaste", with a new logo and slogan. To be honest, it looks and sounds ridiculous, but I have yet to see any plans to rebrand and re-decal trucks. Only change I have seen are very subtle differences in the uniforms that drivers now wear. Regardless, I will continue referring to them as "GreenWaste Recovery".
Thank you to all of the drivers featured for allowing me to film!
- Ivan, it was great having you on my route, I wish you luck with your auto business!

Biking down Azores Street to the bottom of the hill (which was in of itself a journey), we ran into one of the company's McNeilus ZRs with Daniel behind the wheel. Collecting at the Helzer Court Apartments, it's rightfully dubbed "Little San Francisco" by the locals, with its SF-esque houses, and steep streets. In the midst of filming that, we ran into one of West Valley's McNeilus Rear Loaders with Robert working on an order for the complex.
After that, we decided to head off and take care of some errands while we were in the area. In the process, we ran across another rear loader on a couple of residential orders with Jesse behind the wheel. Once we wrapped up with him, the McNeilus ZR from earlier came into the area, accompanied by one of the company's Labrie Automizers with Fernando behind the wheel. We wrapped it up after finishing with both trucks.
For those unfamiliar with San Jose zoning, here's the rundown. After 2007, Waste Connections (dba GreenTeam & West Valley) was given the responsibility of residential garbage & recycling collection in West San Jose, as well as designated multi-family dwellings, and certain government buildings. The city gave control of residential garbage and recycling in North, East, South, and Central San Jose to Garden City Sanitation (now also a Waste Connections affiliate) and California Waste Solutions respectively.

We are committed to Zero Waste and training our Corpsmembers to be the next generation of environmental stewards! We are committed to Zero Waste and a world where waste no longer exists!
Our recycling program is one of our programs that provides great career paths! We offer many pathways to success. Teachers care at SJCC + Charter School and we offer services to support you.
Over the past thirty years, SJCC+CS has grown and modified its programs to meet the needs of the over 10,000 young adults who have benefited from our services. Each SJCC+CS graduate graduates with the potential to earn $400,000 over the course of their lifetime.
Founded by San Jose City Council members Susan Hammer and Shirley Lewis in 1987, the San Jose Conservation Corps was one of the first urban conservation corps in the country. With strong support from the City of San Jose, SJCC+CS began operations with over 20 Corpsmembers in January 1988. Since then SJCC+CS has grown, opening its charter school in 2002 and expanded to two campuses in 2010.
In 2001, SJCC+CS established a YouthBuild program, in partnership with the Department of Labor and AmeriCorps, helping to build affordable housing in San Jose while training students in the construction trades. While SJCC+CS no longer has a YouthBuild program, it continues to receive AmeriCorps funding, enabling current students to earn scholarships that can be used toward post-secondary education or vocational training.

Three have recently been repainted from white to grey (one of them you see here), with new arms and chromed wheels to go with it. Three more are still in the original Oakland colors, and I suspect that those are just parts trucks.
Now the driver in this video wasn't a fan of the truck lol. Apparently the truck packs a lot less than the other trucks, and even with the biggest spill shield currently on the market and the side-door closed, stuff was still flying out. He didn't enjoy that either. This truck was slow as hell too, probably because of the new arm that was installed. There was also a minor exhaust leak that you can hear on accelerations and at idling.
As always, enjoy the video! Thanks to the driver!

However, I'm seeing that a majority of these trucks will more than likely just serve as parts trucks and will subsequently be scrapped or sold off, which is really unfortunate.
Thank you to all of the drivers featured for allowing me to film!
Enjoy the video!

Hey guys, here's a video featuring two of GreenWaste Recovery's many Heil Big Bites.
The 2008 CAT 914G loaders have also begun to be replaced with brand new Volvo L45H loaders.
The original #206 as far as I know has just recently been taken out of regular service. My drivers put in a request to have a replacement since it was the slowest performing Heil in the yard according to them. I now have a Mack LR Leach 2RIII running on my route, which I will try to film in the coming months. I do not know if they intend on selling/scraping/parting out the old #206, or if they intend to do what they did with another unit and that was to completely repaint, refurbish, and renumber it. I was intending on saving this video for a later date, but that revelation expedited the release of this video.
I do have one more video of these trucks stowed away. I'm pretty 2021 will be the last summer where these trucks will be regular route trucks.
Thank you to all of the drivers featured for allowing me to film!
Enjoy the video!

Some of these diesel units were kept by Oakland as spares until 2018. Our yard scrapped three old Volvo WXLL Rapid Rails that sat at the back of the yard for years, which is when some of the M/A's were sent down to San Jose to be refurbished, repainted, and repurposed to fill the void. These are typically left in the yard until around 10-11am, when the bulky item drivers return to the yard and need a truck to complete any open routes.
From what I hear, they're actually better kept than the Autoreaches the yard has, though the trade-off is that they pack about 2-3 tons less than them. These only pack 5-7 tons, while a normal truck can get 7-9 tons, depending if the route is light, heavy, clean, or dirty. My route actually required a second driver to assist since the truck was basically packed out once it reached the bottom half of my route.
Special thank you to Diego for allowing us to film!
Enjoy the video!

In this video, you’ll see my possible new driver who is driving a spare truck (SJ37). My original driver is now doing another route. (Probably the most hated in the company).
You’ll also see him trying to rev the truck (which you can hear in some parts of the video). Because he doesn’t have a set truck as SJ13 is in the shop, you may see different trucks appear on my channel.
SJ37 is a 2008 Peterbilt 320 McNelius Autoreach
Thank you to the driver for letting me film and being so cool.
This video is mean’t for educational purposes. With being said This video may not be used against the driver. If there is anything wrong please email me at jtrang75@gmail.com
